Challenge series to meditate on Proverbs – now at Chapter 22

After reading Proverbs Chapter 22, I choose my favorite line to be 7 –

“The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.”

The common man or woman who works under a rich person, will usually find their yoke heavy. If a poor person borrows money from a rich money lender and cannot pay up, there could be repercussions.

In some cases, the borrower is servant to the lender so much that the person cannot handle it and kill themselves.

I wish there could be a certainty is saying this, “Neither a lender nor a borrower be”. It isn’t good to be a lender. It creates a borrower. When this borrower fails in the capacity to repay, the repercussions are heavy.

The lender can not easily forgive the debt and not collect. This creates situations where borrowers will demand to be released from their debts. Then the lender becomes the one being bullied. This is why the wise advise, “Neither a lender nor a borrower be”.

Mortgages are secured and when the borrower fails to pay, the security is forfeited. This gives rise to other problems, which need to be handled. I’m sure readers understand these situations and there’s no need for elaboration.
