Are you who I think you are?

In the darkness, she called out, “Are you who I think you are?”

The old woman was in her 90s, or nearly 100 years old. Her daughter was nearing her 70th year. This daughter failed to persuade her mom to stay and so the elder went; in search of The Cure.

One night, she returned, not whole, but partially. Her presence was felt by the neighbor, who called out her familiar address, “Grandma?” The old woman denied with a single word, “No”, but her old, grating, distinct voice betrayed her. She recognized her voice, whose human receptacle was carried out of the house and loaded into a vehicle.

She was awake for a long while, but that voice never spoke again.
