Dear Helen,

Thank you for writing thought provoking prompts. I like them as they inspire me by stimulating my grey cells.

How do I decide whether I buy or borrow a book? This depends on the cost factor. How much does this book in question cost? If I borrow it from my nearest public library, will it be cheaper for me? I need to make a round trip to borrow a book and return it before its due date. My transport by bus or subway costs money. If I’m late to return it, I will definitely have to pay a fine, which is dependent on the number of days the book is overdue. Do I have time to spend to borrow a book and return it punctually?

If the cost of travel and fine is almost equivalent to the cost of the book, then I’ll rather buy the book.

Another factor to weigh the consequences, is the value of the book. Do I need to keep it as a reference? Should I own an original copy or pay for a cheaper printed copy? Should I support the author and publisher by buying the original book? I have found that I need to keep reference books. It is worthwhile to buy reference books in all its color and glory.

I take this opportunity to express my appreciation for your wonderful prompts. They are practical, realistic and strike close to home. I hope to be able to write more using your prompts.

Yours sincerely,

Cai.
