The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson, is on my book shelf now.

The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson

The book opens with a Dr John Montague, who wishes to investigate a legendary haunted house named Hill House. He chose 12 people, but only two women, Eleanor Vance and Theodora, finally made it to Hill’s House. The only other male guest is Luke Sanderson, who’s not really a guest, but the compulsory member of the late owners’ estate.

Eleanor and Theodora are friends at first sight. Luke has an easy air and so does Dr Montague.

Mr and Mrs Dudley, the hired help, are only around during the day. The Mrs is the cook and housekeeper, with a habit of repeating statements of her duties, to the guests. She says exactly the same sentences to all the guests. She provides some comic humor.

The author’s writing coveys strong suspense and horror. We read of dubious incidents which trouble us, but later, other people are attributed to have caused the incidents. Humans with troubled minds are weak and fall prey to suggestions. These humans hear or think thoughts which are damaging. The author offers respite by writing of other sources which may have contributed to the incidents. The reader is left to discern what they think or believe are the reasons for the happenings.

This book review does not spoil with revelations. The reader must read the book. It is easy reading and can be finished in one sitting, if you have a stretch of 3 hours to spare. Its a scary horror story. A general caution would be to read this book in the day.

What’s on my book shelf is hosted by Joanne Tracey on every third Friday of the month.
