The trope of the eye following a character was first introduced in the book The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny, when Sonia first tried to spy inside Ilan’s painting studio inside a barn. She peeped inside and saw an eye staring back at her… “another eye locked onto her eye so swiftly that for a moment she thought there was a living person trapped there.” (Desai, p. 44)
When Sonia was in her mother’s ancestral house Cloud Cottage (Big Cloud), she climbed up into the attic to look among her granddad’s possessions. She thought she saw an eye watching her, through the attic’s window. (Desai, p. 202)
Some authors used the metaphor of the All Seeing Eye. This is one example of it.
