So you want to lie flat on your back but how to keep awake in this horizontal pose for meditation? You need to create and maintain some stress and tension in your body, to keep awake. One way of doing this is to raise one arm in the air. This will help to keep you awake.
Where do you lie down? Definitely in a safe place. Use a firm mat, mattress, rug, yoga mat etc. You need a thin, firm pillow to keep your head raised. This layer prevents you feeling the hard ground/ floor beneath. Lie with your legs close together. A variation would be to lie down and raise your knees so that your knee caps touch. Your arms should be close to your sides.
Now, to focus on the prone position for meditation. Focus on your body lying on the ground. How do you feel? Relaxed?
This pose for meditation is good for people who experience back pain, or injury that makes them feel uncomfortable in the upright position. You only need a short period like 15 minutes in this pose.
Before getting upright, slowly prepare yourself. Tell yourself you’re going to sit upright. Then use your arms and hands to propel yourself to stand up.
