Gambling

In some neighborhoods, gambling is loathsome and fearful. A neighbor picks up a fight with another neighbor, within shouting distance of their house. The advantage is to fight and stalk them. It works both ways. The prey becomes the predator too, to exact revenge. the two warring neighbors place bets on each other. Whoever loses a gamble, has to cough up money to settle the loss. You can’t excuse yourself for not having money. Your loss can be tabled up on your account. You’ll never run out of credit.

The Importance of Convenience

I used to spend my whole Saturday morning traveling by bus to another neighborhood, to buy Weekend Editions of our favorite newspapers. My family and I enjoy reading the special features which are only published for the weekend edition, such as the Life and Arts, House and Home etc. It wasn’t convenient. The trip in one way, took around one hour and of course, the return journey also took roughly the same amount of time. Additionally, we have to spend money on public transport. These newspapers are not available in my neighborhood. Going out for two hours just to buy newspapers is a chore.

Occasionally, when we reached the news stand late at around 11:30 am, one paper would be sold out and we had to take another transport into our town’s largest book store, to purchase this elusive newspaper.

After about one year, the news stand that sold those weekend newspapers shut down. They couldn’t maintain their shop because of dwindling customers and income. Then our only recourse was to travel into our town’s largest book store to buy our newspapers.

This complication added more inconvenience, time and cost. We kept this up for around 8 Saturdays, before we managed to find two news vendors who were willing to accept new subscriptions and send us the newspapers.

The first Saturday arrived when we did not have to travel two hours out to buy newspapers. It was like bliss to have newspapers delivered to our front door.
