Broken Foot through a child’s eyes #2 of 30

The child doesn’t understand why her foot slipped past the ladder’s rung. Why did she fall? She had climbed out to reach the ladder a dozen times before. She didn’t fall in those previous climbs. It was probably because she forgot the right way to position the ladder. Yes, that made the ladder beyond the reach of her foot. She missed her footing and fell. One level down.

She was scared. She had time to feel scared during the long seconds she was falling. She tried to grab at the cement ridges that jutted out of the wall. She couldn’t catch them. She continued to fall down. After what seemed like a long eternity, she finally touched bottom. It was painful. Would she be able to stand up? Can she make the climb up the ladder? She had to try.

She didn’t know the common advice was to keep her body still. Movements would make it worse. She only knew she had to try climbing up. She didn’t want the fire department to come to help her back into the house.
