Movie Review of One Battle After Another
Firstly, reviewing the movie theater:
The synthetic leather plastic seats were cold but they were reclining adjustable with motorised settings.
I bought a small order of chicken bites. The meat was tender and delicious.
This movie released in time to coincide with the current POTUS D. Trump. One of the main themes is immigration. The fictional group French 75, fights ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement). We are shown how power corrupts as those holding power make allegations as excuses to raid and disrupt small businesses because they employ immigrants.
Leonardo DiCaprio plays Pat Calhoun and is paired with Teyana Taylor’s character Perfidia Hills in this plot. They act out the stereotypes of white boy loves black girl. They love their shared political ideology on the surface but T. Taylor’s character is messed up as she is torn between behaving as a brave fighter, to hide her frightened inner self. She even betrays herself as she makes out with her arch enemy, Colonel Steve Lockjaw. He outwardly hates black people but like what the conspiracy says, all men who express hatred for blacks, are actually the reverse. This Col. is a hypocrite and coward; right until the end. He blackmailed Perfidia into a sexual tryst. Later, when he is confronted by a committee, he denies his relationship with black women.
Taylor’s character Perfidia, becomes pregnant and everyone assumes Pat is the father. She gives birth to a baby girl who she names Charlene. She thinks motherhood does not fit her and she abandons Charlene with Pat. She continues her life as a revolutionary, but is captured during a failed robbery.
Perfidia’s fake bravery is discovered as she agrees to be a rat to betray the rest of her group, in exchange for amnesty. Yet, for the second man in her life, she still couldn’t reconcile to being in a relationship with Col. Lockjaw, so she runs away.
Due to Perfidia’s ratting, Pat and Charlene are forced to assume fake identities, to avoid being hunted down by Col. Lockjaw. They become Bob and Willa.
The timeline fast forwards to 16 years later, when Willa is a teenager. Her dance night is raided by the army in search for her, but she has been whisked away in the nick of time. Her friend betrays her by giving away her cell phone number, which is traced to her location.
Willa is captured by Col. Lockjaw and her cheek is forcibly swabbed for her DNA testing. The truth is revealed. This part of the plot is so cliche. We all expect this to happen.
Blood is not thicker than water. Not when the blood’s owner is selfish and plans personal success over blood. Col. Lockjaw has his deserving end.
Blood relations don’t count. The younger generation appreciates relationship ties over blood relations. Willa does not tell Bob about the DNA test. She has seen how much Bob sacrificed for her.
