Hollywood is very difficult. Maria is married but she still goes around. Why? Didion’s book title answers the question. Maria has to play it as it lays.
Some people think it is easy to get rid of a fetus but there’s pain, uncertainty, blood. Maria doesn’t say it aloud who the father is. We understand as we read along. Every man and woman plays it as it lays.
She thought she could borrow a car. As it turns out, that car was a stolen one and Maria takes the rap for it. Not to worry, she was sprung out because she said she borrowed it from her friend.
Maria isn’t loose. It is more like everyone who is in the game of survival has to be useful to one another.
Didion’s book was first published in 1970. Now, 55 years later, Hollywood is still the same. We read of actresses being allegedly bullied in many ways. Sometimes, it happens to actors too.
I don’t really recommend this book. It is a very tough world in acting and making movies.
