Many hangers-on would try to cling you. These sycophantic people are fakes.
When I lost my job, one of my neighbors made themselves scarce. The staff running a store on the top level of the neighborhood mall lost their respect for me. I was slighted and passed over in favor of another patron. Years later, I was still shopping at the same mall, while their favorite patron moved on and away from being grateful for their favoritism. I felt good.
