On the first Sunday of Advent (in the Catholic liturgical calendar), we’re asked to reflect and meditate on a past joyful event; to think of a happening that I prepared which brought me joy. Then I have to meditate on how Jesus was present in this event.
I remember a family member was scheduled to return home after a trip overseas. I requested his return because his presence was needed to keep harm at bay. I was doing my work and housework. There was some external disruption and on some days, I felt uncomfortable. I prepared a lot for this. I prayed to Mother Mary daily, for four months. When she speaks, Jesus listens to her. I alone, am nobody and undeserving to petition Jesus for anything. I believe my rosary prayers were heard and Mother Mary pitied me.
I had sent daily messages to my family member to ask him to return but he put no significance in my plea. He refused to return because his natal family asked him to stay on in their home, to perform family duties. Finally, after four months, he finally agreed to book a return plane ticket.
I believe Jesus was present in our preparations, right up to the day my family member landed safely late at night. Usually, one neighbor or another would be raising a ruckus when anybody on this street returns home late at night. Its because they have tenants who sleep very early immediately at dusk, to rise early even before sunrise, to go to work in a large market, and a coffeeshop. They hate any noise at night as that could disrupt their sleep and they would be feeling sleepy the next day and ruin their working hours.
It was a big blessing that the fussy neighbors didn’t raise a huge hue and cry over our late home coming.
Now that Jesus is coming at Christmas, we have to prepare our hearts to receive Him. We are asked to think what we can change during this wait for His arrival.
I need to change to use my blessing wisely, to take care of myself and my family. Previously, I lacked good “housekeeping” and couldn’t manage to take care of my own needs. Then, I learned a few good methods and started on them. I have to maintain my goals to bear fruit.
