Meditating on Sonia and Sunny

As I was reading on Sonia and Sunny, I was also thinking and meditating on Kiran Desai’s messages. I was paying attention to her sentences that held extra meaning for me as her words struck familiar chords with me. Many themes, tropes, metaphors and literary devices spoke volumes of truths.

After some meditation, I decided these are the themes that spoken loudest to me:

  1. Young adults dating

2. The loneliness of student life abroad

3. Artists with mental illnesses

4. January-December romances, or Spring-Winter relationships

5. Disparity in age gaps

6. Common superstitions

7. Stimulus to suggest a ghost is visiting

8. Self-inflicted guilty conscience

9. Mother-son relationship that is a reversal of Freud’s Oedipus Complex

10. Pride and pretense to keep up appearances

11. Guilty conscience precipitates dreams
