Meditate while eating! Just because there is “Eating Meditation“, it doesn’t mean you can eat more, or as and when you wish. Eating Meditation refers to mindful eating, to fully appreciate the taste of food, the precious value of food, the process of chewing to make food digestible and your stomach during eating.

In order to pay attention to your food, you need to focus your full attention to it. You should not multitask while chewing food. It is better to concentrate on your jaws masticating (chewing) food. Do you think you need to exert effort to cut your food with your teeth? Are you chewing food with minimal efforts? Some people lack a perfectly aligned set of jaw and teeth and when they use more force or hurry, they tend to accidentally bite their inner cheek. I am like that too. I try to prevent accidental harm by paying attention to my teeth chewing at a moderate pace and not hurriedly, when I tend to chomp down on my inner cheek’s lining.

As we savor a variety of food on our plate, it is quite tough to be eating silently in deep concentration. If you find challenges in mindful eating for the entire duration of your meal, try to focus for a shorter time, to be measured in a number of minutes. Some people use a portion of their food, for meditation, and then stop, relax and eat in their normal manner.

To help us meditate during eating, we can think of the efforts put into growing the separate classes of food that are on our plate. We think of the farmers who grew the greens, the fishermen who worked to bring fish for us and animal farmers who took care of their livestock. We thank these people for their work. Last but not least, we thank God for enabling us to obtain food.
