Mrs Dalloway Book Review: What’s on my bookshelf June 20 2025

What’s on my book shelf is hosted by Joanne Tracey on every third Friday of the month.

In June, this falls on June 20 2025.

This is on my shelf:

Mrs Dalloway by Virginia Woolf.

Mrs Dalloway by Virginia Woolf

I learnt a lot by reading Mrs Dalloway. The author has used literally every writing technique in the book, and more. A single object in an event, can be used to link up many characters. She used polar opposites to stretch this device. O, the genius of Ms Woolf. This is a good book for Literature class and creative writing classes.

Mrs Clarissa Dalloway walks to meet her regular florist, Miss Pym, at Mulberry’s. She sees

delphiniums and roses. While in the shop, they hear a car outside having a loud splutter. The author uses this noise as a device to connect to the setting, the pedestrians, and Clarissa’s friends. Westminister is small enough to rub elbows with your acquaintances, when you’re out and about. This makes the story more plausible.

What does a car in the era of Mrs Dalloway (written around 1925) look like?

In this novella of 180 pages, we follow Clarissa as she busies herself preparing for her dinner party that evening. We are introduced to her circle of friends, their complex relationships, back stories and more.

Old loves never die. Even as they see the futility of reconnecting.

I’m on Page 100. This book is still on my shelf of TBR.
