Do you dream of Batman’s Joker? This post is talking about that Joker and more. How so?
- The Joker in dreams is a pun, to disguise somebody or something else.
- The Joker is a riddle and when you see the Joker in a dream, it suggests you face a riddle in your life
The reason why a dreams is disguised as a joker, or in other imagery:
- The unconscious wants to show prohibited themes censored by the consciousness. The method is to disguise dreams as riddles, puns, homonyms and jokes. The strategy of inventing complicated disguises is named as dreamwork. The consciousness does not allow straightforward showing of sensitive topics as it polices, like the superego of the personality. For example, the unconscious hides a wild fantasy of meeting with one’s soul mate. Then one night, this unconscious manages to sneak in a disguised dream of making a new friend in the book club. The conscious mind remembers this dream and facilitates the actual appearance at the local book club. Lo and behold! the person meets many new friends who share the common love of reading. This could be the start of a string of exciting dates …

Freud’s close friend, Wilhelm Fliess, noticed that his narrated accounts of patients’ dreams, were described with puns and jokes. When the unconscious self invented dreams with jokes, the conscious self is usually the type who jokes. Freud explained that it was especially so when the dreamer was also a joker in his conscious life. Thus, when the unconscious took over with inventing dreams, the jokes and puns also manifested.
I know someone who likes to joke in real life. He also tells he has complex, weird and funny dreams. he definitely fits into Freud’s theory. This is just one person and you might say one man does not account for all mankind. But have you met such people?
