Cats for Mental Health, Pet Therapy & Meditation

When I was volunteering in the mental health hospital, there used to be regular schedule for cats to be brought in to help patients. The long stay patients are encouraged to interact with felines by petting them, simple grooming of fur, or feeding them treats. Many patients love to pet cats and interact with them. They feel good, raise their self-esteem, as they see how important they are to the animal. These patients have talked about how they anticipate the next visit from the felines.

Domestic pets offer a kind of pet therapy that lowers stress, and promotes the feel-good feelings.

What can you do if you don’t have a cat and can’t afford to keep one at home? You can always try to volunteer with the S.P.C.A. and other animal welfare shelters. Its a great way to get close with animals, without incurring expenses. It is also a good try-out before you prepare to make a longer term commitment to adopt a pet.

If you practce yoga, you can also encourage your cat or dog to do yoga together. With training, the cat or dog will be able to position itself into yoga poses.
