The woman neighbor, who lives in the apartment across from the elevator lobby, works from home as a masseuse. She is speaking to her customer. She could make out there were two women as their two voices are distinct. How strange she is able to hear their conversation. They must be talking loudly.

“I have never met a woman so strange and resistant to my pleas.”

“You can’t expect her to give in so easily.”

She reaches for her clock at her bedside table. It says 2 a.m. She slumps back on her pillow. Sleep eluded her.
